The Lawrence Teachers Association has been without a contract for 10 years. Despite the Taylor Law the district refuses to abide by the expired contract resulting in the filing of 31 grievances. Lawrence is the third wealthiest district on Long Island and nearly two-thirds of its more than 8,000 school age children do not attend public school. Of the students attending public school, more than 77% are economically disadvantaged and 83% are students of color.
